OR News & Past Events

Mark Orchard (Bristowe 1981)

Never one to forget Reed's, Mark and his wife Helen, were the third ORs to visit from "across the pond".  Mark, based in Bermuda, was in the UK for the memorial service of his guardian when at School.  The last time Mark visited, he brought one of his three sons, Beau, so we are looking forward to meeting the other two in the fullness of time!

Scott Haumersen (Capel 1974)

It was great to see Scott who 'popped in' to say hello with his daughter as they were visiting all the way from Wisconsin, USA!  Scott runs his own successful accountancy and financial advisory company, Wegner CPAs based in Madison, WI.

John Hind (Capel 1969)

John came to visit us at Reed's all the way from British Columbia.  After a nostalgic tour, John was treated to lunch in the School Dining Room and was impressed with the improvements all round!

John moved to Canada with his Canadian wife after retiring as a Chief Executive of a UK health trust several years ago.

Mini 1960s Reunion

On the 26th August a number of early 1960 leavers managed to get their act together and met for lunch at The Bear in Oxshott.  A pleasant time was had remembering times past and the realisation that three had achieved their three score and ten years earlier in the years.   It was agreed that it would be great to have future sessions and to try and enlarge the group. A future date of the 16th March 2016 was agreed at the same place.   If you would like to come along and importantly if you know of others who would also be interested then please contact Chris Hawkins on chris.hawkins3@sky.com or Sharmaine Matthews at Reed’s. It would be great to enlarge this group, which tends to be under represented at OR events.

Those attending were: Ian Chate, Chris Hawkins, John Hill, Geoff Levy and Tony Turnbull

Remembrance Poppies

You might be proud to know that a special remembrance poppy has been purchased in honour of each of our former pupils who fell in World War I as part of the country's Centenary commemorations. On 13th October at the Tower of London, we were delighted that General The Lord Dannatt, Constable of the Tower of London, read out the names of these 112 Old Reedonians (http://rollofhonour.tumblr.com/) A film of this "roll of honour" will be posted once uploaded on their website.

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.

As part of the Atlantic Lions rowing team, he will be taking part in the 2015 Talisker Whisky Atlantic race - a biennial rowing event from the Canary Islands to Antigua, dubbed the ‘toughest race on earth’. If you are interested in the race or indeed sponsoring the team, details can be found at http://atlanticlions.com/. Good luck Dave, we look forward to updates.

Totnes Reunion 2014

We were deligthed that some of our ORs who attended the School in Totnes were able to get together for another year, althoug sadly their numbers become slightly more depleted each year.  However, they were gallantly represented by: Tony Wiggiins (Chief Organiser), Ralph Wyatt, Richard Borley, Keith Miller, John Nethercleft, Bill Collins, John Rogers, Alan Rogers, Derek Owen, Derek Weston, Bill Crawforth and Ken Sambrook.

OR Tennis success

On Sunday 7th September 2014, the Old Reedonians Tennis Team took part in the final of the D’Abernon Cup, the national competition for Old Boys of independent schools. They reached the final after coming through a 16 team qualifying round in April.  The final was played on the hallowed grounds of the All England Lawn Tennis Club in Wimbledon. The team consisted of Adrian Blackman (Mullens 1992), Paul Jessop (Blathwayt 1991), Gary Le Pla (Mullens 1994), Ben Haran (Mullens 1994), Josh Miller (Mullens 2005) and Alex Bull (Mullens 2007). The final itself against Old Reptonians where our OR team fought hard and held a 2-1 lead after the first round. However, this was not to be their day and they ended up losing the fixture 6-3.  It was a brilliant experience  and great to get this fantastic group of ORs playing, some of whom had not been on a court together for over twenty years! Roll on the D’Abernon Cup 2015 when they will be aiming to go one better and bring home the silverware!

Recent Leavers' Hockey, Rugby & Drinks (of course!)

On Wednesday 3rd September, we had a double date of OR Girls Hockey v School XI which then was followed by OR Rugby v 1st XV.  Both matches were won by a margin by the School, but the most important thing is that everyone had a good evening.

Go Olivia!

Olivia Chilton (Blathwayt 2012) played for the full England team in a training game against South Africa in April as both teams prepare for the World Cup in June.   Whilst it was a non capped game it is a great achievement by her considering she is still only 19 and was playing alongside many medalists from 2012.

England won 2-1 and Olivia played very well considering she had just joined the squad. This World Cup will be too soon for her however it is a big compliment to her to be playing on games like this given the proximity of the World Cup.

She is the first, and hopefully not the last, of the recent leavers to play for the full England side.

OR Reunion in Dubai

Thanks to James Parker, a band of ORs based in Dubai got together in April for a drink and catch-up.  A good time was had by all.  From left to right:

Neal Petrie (Mullins 2005), Graham Tooby (Bristowe 1991), Holly Woolston (Blathwayt 2007), James Parker (Bristowe 2002), Richard Pakenham (Mullins 1987), Ollie Tan (Mullins 2002), Dale Stapleton (Blathwayt 2002) and Al Clark (Blathwayt 2002).

HM The Queen visits Reed's School

We were honoured by the visit of our Patron HM The Queen with the Duke of Edinburgh today (Thursday 6 March) as part of our Bicentenary celebrations.  An amazing day for everyone at School ...the sun shone as all the pupils and staff heartily cheered and greeted the Royal visitors.  A few more photographs are available to view at:

Last year's Captain of Rugby, Yiannis Liozias, made his full international debut for Cyprus against Slovenia last weekend (11th November). Cyprus won 34-3 and Yiannis scored a try.  He's pictured here with fellow OR and 1st XV team mate, Matt Macpherson.  Both at Loughborough University playing in their BUCS 1st XV.

Josie Inverdale

Josie Inverdale (Bristowe 2010) and Olivia Chilton (Blathwayt 2012)

Olivia and Josie have been selected to represent GB in the Youth Olympics to be held in Australia in January.  Their selection has been done through the British Olympic Association as the event is designed to give top young athletes the opportunity to play in high level competitions. Strong performances from the girls could put them in the mix for Rio in 2016.  We wish them every success.  (December 2012)

OR Annual Dinner 2012

Jim Williams & Simon Holden

Jim Williams (Capel 1959) & Simon Holden (Blathwayt 1957)

Our OR Southern African network is alive and well.  Jim Williams  from SA met up with Simon Holden  from Zambia in Johannesburg with their respective better halves, Liz and Wendy.  After a convivial lunch, the pair were snapped with another great South African, none other than Nelson Mandela - the Sandton statue that is!   If any OR living in that part of the world, would like to connect with our informal SA Network, Jim and Simon would love to hear from you.  You can search the OR network by visiting the Directory page under our Online Community area.

Grafton Morrish 2

Grafton Morrish Golf Competition - report from Stuart Robinson (Captain)

Reed's once again entered a team for this prestigious golf tournament. The tournament consists of a qualifying event in which each school enters a team of 6 old boys who play in pairs. Reed's managed to come in the top five in our region and so progressed to the finals which were held in October. We had an excellent weekend in the sunshine up at Hunstanton and Brancaster. Our first round match was played against King's Bruton, a school in Devon. Remarkably all three of our matches went to the last hole. Harry Packenham and Stuart Robinson and Ed Job and James Davey halved their two matches and George Kershaw and Harry Kershaw were unlucky to lose their match on the final green. This meant Reed's were entered into the plate competition at Brancaster golf club where we had a respectable top 10 finish.

Girls hockey 2012

Girls Hockey Reunion

It was great to see some famous faces from the former Reed's girls' teams come back to play against the current School 1st XI.  Expertly captained by Jerry Ross (Mullens 2008), the OR team went on to win 2:1, all helped by the supporters who came down to cheer the girls on.  Let's hope we can get another girls' team together for the Stephen Shiells Memorial Tournament on 21 March 2013. (September 2012)

Recent leaver rugby 2012

OR Recent Leavers XV v School 1st XV

The first fixture in the OR calendar is always a tense one, with the old boys' taking on the new School 1st XV.  Played at Whiteley Village, there was a record turnout of Reedonians, ORs, past and current parents who came down to support the teams in the lovely September sunshine.  The ORs won by a small margin in a hard fought game, not made any easier by the similarly hard pitch.  (September 2012)

(pre September 2012)

 Ben Palmer

Ben Palmer (Blathwayt 2009)

Ben tells us that in addition to getting a First Class Honours degree in BSc Geophysical Sciences at Southampton and gaining a place at Imperial College to study a Masters in Metals and Energy Finance, he has won a medal at the 420 Open World Sailing Championships in Lake Garda in Italy. and given 470 Olympic sailing a go.  A full report will be included in the Reeder 2013 magazine. (July 2012)

 Terence Buie

Terence Buie (Bristowe 1965)

It was great to hear from Terence who can't believe that it's almost 50 years since he left Reed's and went to the University of Kent, ending up doing his graduate studies in Canada.   He continues to live in British Columbia, Canada, near the town of Nelson.  Since retiring from the investment business ten years ago, Terry has travelled extensively in South America, Bali and India.  More news from Terry will appear in the next Reeder magazine.  (July 2012)

Nigel Fraser Ker & Jeremy Eynon

Nigel Fraser Ker (Capel 1978) & Jeremy Eynon (Capel 1977)

Nigel is a loyal and regular visitor to School, so when his old friend Jeremy got in touch, Nigel did not hesitate in convincing him to visit us.  Jeremy - who currently lives in California, but is looking to his next move - had not been back to School since leaving, so you can imagine there were lots of new things to see, as well as reliving the memories evoked by the more familiar haunts!  (July 2012)

Barrett, Ayres, Sinden, Raymont & Banks

Alan Barrett (1961), Andrew Ayres (1961), Rex Sinden (1962), Thomas Raymont (1951) & Ken Banks (1949)

Despite the difference in leaving dates, this group of ORs were known to each other in some form or the other with hockey being the main connectionLunch in the Andrew Reed Room was an "enlightening" affair with the many stories and reminisces being shared.  (July 2012)

Darren Paterson (Bristowe 1985)

Completely out of the blue, Darren and his new wife, Andrea "popped" in to say a very welcome hello - taking time out from their European honeymoon.  The  happy couple live in Sydney, where Darren has been for several years now working in marketing and advertising.  It was wonderful to see them both.  (May 2012)

Marcus Viner & Charlotte Mocatta

Marcus Viner (Mullens 1986) & Charlotte Mocatta (Mullens 1988)

Marcus had popped in to discuss possibly helping with the Bicentenary celebrations (tapping into his creative and film production skills), when who should also arrive at Reception, but fellow OR Charlotte Mocatta - or Church as she was known at School.  We couldn't resist the photo opportunity!  (May 2012)
 Stuart Bentley-Hibbert & Carol Bryant

Stuart Bentley-Hibbert (Mullens 1989)

Despite having run the London Marathon (in aid of the Reed's Foundation) just the day before, Stuart managed to make the journey by train down to Oxshott to visit us.  He looked remarkably fit and well, although we believe his toes took a bit of a battering.  After a tour of the School, we treated him to lunch in the School Dining Hall where he bumped into his House former Matron, Carol Bryant: both recognised each other immediately even after 20 years!  We hope to see Stuart back again next year.  (April 2012)

 Jim Williams & Peter Bint

Peter Bint (Bristowe 1960) and Jim Williams (Capel 1959)

What a special April it was going to be for Peter and Jim, as they met up in London to celebrate their 70th birthdays.  You may think this does not sound very special, but when we mention that Peter had travelled from Thailand and Jim from South Africa, it makes the story even more remarkable.  Hosted in Peter's daughter's lovely home, the best friends - who met at Reed's over 60 years earlier - were joined by other OR contemporaries and respective wives.  The guest list included: Roger Mew, Neilson Kite, Mike Ryalls, Derek Dinsmore, John Grant, Barry Pettman, Arthur Forrest, Hugh Drawen and Harry Ridsdale.  Sharmaine, your Alumni Manager, was also honoured to receive an invitation to this wonderful occasion, and a very happy time was had by all.  (April 2012)

Chirs Neira

Chris Neira (Capel 1998)

With the summer season over in Majorca, Chris was in London on business, but still had time to pop down to Oxshott to see us all.  He was delighted to see so many familiar faces still around, especially Chris and Sarah in "the Shop".   (January 2012)

 Ian Hutchinson

Ian Hutchinson (Bristowe 1978)

We spent a lovely afternoon with Ian and his wife, Michelle, who were on a visit from New Zealand. They had a good look around the School and were hopefully pleasantly surprised by all the changes and developments.  (November 2011
