Retirement of David Jarrett, Headmaster

Message from Chris Hawkins, President, Old Reedonians:
I think many of you will know that not only does 2014 mark the 200th anniversary of Reed’s, it will also see the retirement of David Jarrett, who has been our Headmaster since 1997.  In that time, Reed’s has progressed considerably, improving and changing where necessary, to meet the demands required of a public school into the 21st century.  Pupil numbers have increased from just over 400 to the current level of 650; a continuing building programme is in place providing innovative facilities such as FutureTech; the specialist tennis, skiing and now golfing academies are leading the way in the UK, the School now appears in the Top 200 league table for A level results and it had an outstanding classification at the last Independent Schools’ Inspection.  All this whilst still retaining the original charitable ethos of the School’s founder.

With this in mind I feel that ORs should, as we have done in the past for other departing Headmasters, make a presentation to David to mark his retirement and to show our appreciation.

I have spoken with Anne, his wife, who tells me that they were very taken with the bespoke pictures created by Barry Cawston (Capel 1984), who not only displayed at the Menier Gallery last year as part of the School’s 200th anniversary celebrations, but curated the exhibition too.  I have spoken to Barry, who tells me that providing we commission him before the end of March, he could produce an original piece which he feels David would like and that could then be presented at OR Reunion Day on 29th June.  The cost would be in the region of £2,000; I hope that you would both approve of this idea and be willing to contribute.  You can do so by either completing the online form below or sending your cheque (payble to 'Reed's School' to Sharmaine Matthews, Reed's School, Sandy Lane, Cobham, Surrey, KT11 2ES).

Additionally, and especially for those who attended Reed’s from 1997 onwards, we would like to collate your comments, anecdotes, memories, thoughts and thanks for what David has achieved with any photographs that might be appropriate.  This will be added to the School’s collection that will be presented in book form at the end of term.  To do so, please email or contact Sharmaine Matthews at the School (email smatthews@reeds.surrey.sch.uk or telephone 01932 589490) so we can collate them.
