The Annual Foundation Appeal

Soon after the London Orphan Asylum (Reed’s School predecessor) was founded in 1813, the necessity to find continuing outside financial help to maintain the then orphanage was recognised.  In 1815 the first Appeal to the City was made, arousing the interest of the Royal Family and the Duke of Wellington, among other distinguished patrons.

Each year fundraising dinners, under the Appeal President, were held in The City Tavern at Bishopsgate, and eminent guest speakers, such as Charles Dickens, were heard.  An increasing number of individuals, institutions and firms came to support our charitable Foundation, and it is thanks to their generosity that many thousands of disadvantaged boys and girls have been given a sound start in life that they would not otherwise have had.

The key aim of the launch is to promote the work of the Reed’s School Foundation to key City and business contacts, who may be able to help support disadvantaged pupils on bursaries and provide life-changing opportunities.   It has been held at the Worshipful Company of Grocers’ Hall for over 50 years and we are delighted that they have agreed to host us again.

The 2015/16 Annual Foundation Appeal will be officially launched at a luncheon on Friday 9th October 2015 by the 2015/16 by Appeal President, Michael J. Kirkwood, CMG, FCIB, who will be instrumental in helping us achieve our £150,000 target.

Supporting The Annual Foundation Appeal

Any boy who has lost one or both parents, or whose home situation otherwise constitutes a special case of need, may apply for entrance as a Foundationer, if it is seen that he can benefit from the high standard of education and pastoral care provided by Reed's School: girls may apply for Sixth Form entry.  There is no occupational background qualification, and any firm, organisation or charity may apply to Reed’s School on behalf of its charges/members who qualifies for the help that the School can offer.  For this reason the Governors feel justified in appealing for funds from a wide variety of firms, institutions and individuals, knowing that the facilities of the School are at the disposal of all who need them.

If you would like to support the work of the Reed’s School Foundation, and help a young person who has the misfortune to lack a complete home background, and who is distressed and disadvantaged, please visit our Donation Page for more information or contact:
